Lieutenant Colonel Jack Shields
Commander, 35th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion


Lieutenant Colonel Jack Shields is a native of Liberty, Missouri. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and was commissioned through ROTC as a second lieutenant in the Transportation Corps in 1996.

Lieutenant Colonel Shields’ previous assignments include serving as platoon leader, 32nd Transportation Company (Palletized Load System); executive officer, 2nd Transportation Company (Heavy Equipment Transporter); then as Battalion Transportation Officer, 68th Corps Support Battalion; and then as Commander, 586th Movement Control Detachment, 43rd Area Support Group, at Fort Carson, Colorado, from November 1996 through November May 2000. From April 2001 to April 2002 he was Deputy Division Transportation Officer, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Red Cloud, Republic of Korea, before moving to assume duties as Battalion S-4, 526th Forward Support Battalion, 101st Division Support Command, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He next became Company Commander, 541st Transportation Company, 101st Corps Support Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, during Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2003 to August 2004 and was later Battalion S-3, 561st Corps Support Battalion, 101st Corps Support Group, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from August 2004 through April 2005. From May 2005 until June 2006 he served as aide-de-camp, Chief of Transportation, Fort Eustis, Virginia, before becoming Support Operations Officer, 526th Brigade Support Battalion and Brigade S-4, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from July 2007 through November 2009 (Operation Iraqi Freedom). His next assignment was as Joint Logistics Plans Officer, U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, from December 2009 to June 2013 and as Defense Cooperation Logistics Officer, United States Army Central, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, from June 2013 through June 2014 before moving to become G-3 Chief of Future Operations, 3rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in July 2014. He assumed his present duties in June 2015.

Lieutenant Colonel Shields is a graduate of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JCWS), Joint Forces Staff College and Intermediate Level Education (ILE), Command and General Staff College. He also completed the Combined Logistics Captain’s Career Course, CAS3 (Combined Arms and Services Staff School), and the Transportation Officer Basic Course.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Meritorious Unit Award with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Unit Citation with oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with two service stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Korean Defense Service Medal. He also holds the U.S. Army Parachutist and Air Assault Badges.
