History
The 168th Transportation Detachment has a history of service both overseas and in the Pacific, including being stationed in Hawaii, where the unit supported Army operations across the Indo-Pacific region. While assigned in Hawaii, the detachment played a vital role in sustaining readiness, enabling mobility, and supporting joint and Army forces operating throughout the theater.
Most notably, the 168th Transportation Detachment distinguished itself during the Vietnam War, where the unit conducted exceptionally demanding and dangerous logistical missions in support of U.S. and allied forces. As a Transportation Detachment, the 168th was responsible for the movement of personnel, equipment, ammunition, fuel, and critical supplies; often under hostile conditions.
The valor and professionalism of the 168th Transportation Detachment did not go unrecognized. During its service in Vietnam, the unit earned multiple prestigious honors, including the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism and outstanding performance in combat operations from 8 February to 24 March 1971.
In addition, the detachment was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for exceptionally meritorious service during the period 1 April to 30 September 1967, reflecting sustained excellence in support of combat forces.
The unit also received the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, recognizing both valor in combat and contributions to civic and stability operations in support of the Vietnamese people. These honors stand as a testament to the vital role logistical Soldiers play in the success of military operations; proving that victory on the battlefield is made possible through disciplined sustainment and dedicated support.
From the strategic heart of the Pacific, the 168th Transportation Detachment was reborn under the Hawaiian sun, activated at Pearl Harbor on March 16, 2017. Though its modern chapter began in this iconic location, steeped in military history, the unit inherits a rich, battle-tested lineage.
Today’s Soldiers of the 168th Transportation Detachment carry forward this proud lineage to Yokohama North Dock Japan. They inherit a legacy forged through sacrifice, professionalism, and commitment to duty; a legacy they now uphold through their service to the United States Army Japan the Indo-Pacific region, and the Nation.
