LIEUTENANT COLONEL MARK E. MCDERMOTT
Deputy Commander, 10th Regional Support Group
Lieutenant Colonel Mark McDermott is a Logistics Officer in the United States Army. A native of Sioux City, Iowa, he started his military career by enlisting in the United States Army Reserve and was assigned to the 3/14 Field Artillery Battery in 1982. He was commissioned through ROTC in 1987 and became a Graves Registration and Bakery Section Detachment Commander for the 1013th Field Service Company, McCook, Nebraska and subsequently entered active duty after completing Quartermaster Officer Basic Course in 1989. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, a Master of Business Administration from Regis University, Denver, Colorado. His military education includes the Quartermaster Officer Basic and Combine Logistics Officer Advance Courses, Petroleum Officer’s Course, Support Operations Course (Phase II), Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College.
After completing the Basic Course in 1989, he was assigned to the 1st Support Battalion, 18th Airborne Corps, Multi-National Forces & Observers, Sinai, Egypt; where his duties included Class IX (Repair Parts) Platoon Leader, Class I (Rations) Platoon Leader, and Central Receiving Point OIC for the Supply Company. After his tour in the Sinai Peninsula, he was assigned to Alpha Company, 704th Main Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado where he served as the Class I and Water Platoon Leader, Class III (Petroleum) Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and a Support Operations Supply and Transportation Officer. In December 1992 he deployed with the 10th Mountain Division in support of Operation Restore Hope as a G-4 Supply and Services Staff Officer.
After attending the Combined Logistics Officer Advance Course in 1994, Lieutenant Colonel McDermott was assigned to the 24th Corps Support Group, Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He served as a Support Operations Staff Officer and deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Vigilant Warrior and deployed to South Korea. He was then assigned to the 87th Corps Support Battalion and served as Battalion S-4 and as Commander of the 226th Supply and Service Company with two Bright Star Egypt deployments. He then served at the U.S. Army Pittsburgh Recruiting Battalion, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as a Battalion Operations Officer.
In 2000 he was assigned to the 80th Area Support Group, Belgium where he served in positions as Deputy Director of Logistics and Director of Security, Plans, and Operations (S2/3). In 2003 he was assigned to the U.S. Army 6th Recruiting Brigade and served as the Salt Lake City Battalion Executive Officer in Salt Lake City and then as the Brigade S-3 and Chief of Staff in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Lieutenant Colonel McDermott deployed to Baghdad, Iraq from 2007 to 2008 where he served as the Deputy Director of the Iraqi Strategic Support Cell (ISSC), Deputy Chief of Staff, Resource & Sustainment (CJ1/4/8), Multi-National Forces-Iraq. Responsibilities included assisting the Iraqi Security Forces with Logistics Capacity Development and helping the Government of Iraq with rehabilitating their scrap metal industry.
Personal Awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (3 oak leaf clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (4 oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (3 oak leaf clusters), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War On Terrorism Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Multi-National Forces & Observers Medal and Parachutist Badge.
